Anticipation and preparedness of large-scale flood events play a key role in mitigating their impacts and optimizing the strategic planning of water resources. Although a lot of countries have well-established systems for river monitoring and early flood warning, an increasing number of inhabitants is affected by floods every year. The Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) has been set up providing an overview on upcoming floodings in large world river basins.
Implementers from Member States have to make their data conformant to INSPIRE before 2020, for data sets in the scope of Annexes II and III of the Directive. This comprises the Elevation and Orthoimagery themes, for which data has to be mainly provided using the raster spatial representation type, but also other themes which are also allowing it as an option.
Copernicus is the European Union (EU) flagship programme on monitoring the Earth’s environment using satellite and in-situ observations aiming to deliver operational data and information services on a range of topical areas. Based upon these baseline services, many other value-added products can be tailored to more specific public, commercial needs or domain sectors. Copernicus will also address policy objectives, bringing an essential contribution to the 7th EU Environment Action Programme, which was recently agreed with the aim of “living well, within the limits of our planet”.
ECMWF is partner of the EU-funded (Horizon2020) EarthServer-2 project and is setting up a web service that facilitates climate data access, exploration, analysis and visualisation based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. By doing this, ECMWF data shall become easier accessible to researchers and decision-makers of the MetOcean and GIS community.
PlanetServer, the Planetary Science Data Service of the EC-funded EarthServer-2 project (#654367) tackles the planetary Big Data analytics problem with an array database approach (Baumann et al., 2014). It is developed to serve a large amount of calibrated, map-projected planetary data online, mainly through Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Coverage Processing Service (WCPS) (e.g. Rossi et al., 2014; Oosthoek et al., 2013; Cantini et al., 2014).
PlanetServer, the Planetary Service of the recently completed EC FP7 e-infrastructure project EarthServer (http://kahlua.eecs.jacobs-university.de/~earthserver/) (Rossi et al, 2014; Baumann et al., 2015) is a state-of-art online data exploration and analysis system based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. It concentrates on Mars imagery and hyperspectral (MRO CRISM) data (Oosthoek et al., 2014) and also comprises subsurface sounding data from MEX MARSIS (Cantini et al., 2014).
